Champion ATV

Champion ATV racer Joe Byrd proves that it’s possible to both teach and win. Not only is Byrd a two-time AMA ATV Pro MX champion, but through his Joe Byrd Quad Riding School, he’s helped foster the careers and talents of many of the country’s top ATV racers. “It’s funny that many of the last few national champions have all attended my riding school,” admits Byrd. “So I guess you could say I’ve taught them too much!”
Byrd began racing ATVs at age 13 and collected an amateur title. In 1993 he turned pro and established the Joe Byrd Quad Riding School, teaching racing techniques and safety to hundreds of riders every year. He’s proud of the fact that many of the top competitors in the AMA Pro ATV series are graduates of one of his training schools. “In the pro class I estimate over half of the racers competing have attended a Joe Byrd Quad Riding School,” explains Byrd. “It’s really rewarding to see everyone doing so well. Riding schools teach racers techniques to help them become top-level professionals. Once they leave a school, it’s their job to go home and continue honing their skills—to develop an edge over their competitors.”
ATVIn 2005, when American Honda got involved in ATV racing at a factory level, Byrd was a logical choice to receive Honda’s support given his success and long association with the manufacturer. He went on to win the first-ever AMA Pro ATV Motocross Championship in 2006 and made it two in a row by winning the following year. “I took my first Pro ATV Championship victory in 2006 and again in 2007,” explains Byrd. “In 2008 and 2009 I finished runner-up—I barely missed out on those titles. Unfortunately, I got hurt in 2010 and wasn’t able to complete the season; 2011 hasn’t gone quite as planned, as we’ve had a number of niggling things come up early in the series. However, the team and I have figured out our issues, and things are looking up for the remainder of the season. I’m definitely itching to get back on top this year and pulling for a dominant 2012 season.”
Joe Byrd is again riding Honda’s TRX450R in the Pro, Pro Am and Production A classes. “Honda has the same work ethic as I do,” Bird says of his long and successful association with Honda. “We click well together. They’ve always taken good care of the team. Honda wants to win as badly as I do so it’s a good partnership. It’s one thing to have a sponsor behind you, but it’s another thing for that sponsor to always be there and treat you as good as Honda does. I don’t ever feel like I’m just a number. I feel like I’m a part of the family; I feel at home here. The two of us just make a good combination.
“I started riding a Honda quad when I was young because Honda had a reputation for being reliable, and the product was readily accessible. When Honda decided to go ATV racing at a factory level in 2005, I was riding their product and doing well. It was a logical choice for them to get behind me, and we’ve been working together ever since.”

Class Inducted Into Hall Of Fame Result Nascar 2012

Nascar 2012
Family was the prevailing theme as NASCAR inducted its third, and most diverse, class into the Hall of Fame.

Cale Yarborough, notoriously tight with his money, recalled the days he fed his family with 10-cent cans of black eyed peas -- a lifetime ago compared to the special outfit his wife bought for Friday night's ceremony.

Darrell Waltrip, in a humorous speech that stretched almost 24 minutes, grew emotional only once, when thanking his daughter for flying 25 hours from a mission trip in the Philippines to surprise him at the inauguration.

Dale Inman was inducted by his cousin, seven-time champion Richard Petty, and the late Richie Evans' widow thanked the fans for keeping her husband's memory alive.

And Leonard Wood inducted Glen Wood into the Hall by calling "my big brother, Glen Wood," to the stage.

Glen Wood, a pioneer NASCAR team owner, stressed his induction into the Hall of Fame was an accomplishment of the Wood Brothers race team and his decades-long partnership with manufacturer Ford.

"This is not just about me being inducted in the Hall of Fame. It's also about the Wood Brothers. And it's about NASCAR," he said. "And I'm proud to have been a NASCAR driver and car owner for the past 60 years, and I'm proud of this great honor, and this is about two families: the Wood family and the Ford family working together, which has resulted in me being here tonight."

The most diverse class opened with Inman, the first crew chief to be inducted.

Inman was introduced by Petty, a member of the first Hall of Fame class. Inman crew chiefed Petty to all his titles, and won an eighth with Terry Labonte.

"Neither one of us was that mechanically inclined. We just sort of learned as we went," said Petty of his cousin Inman. "Way back when, there wasn't no such thing as a crew chief. They had mechanics, crew mechanics, whatever they wanted to call them, and Dale was basically the first one.

"He's the one that basically started the crew chief operation."

Petty then rattled off a list of prominent NASCAR crew chiefs and mechanics -- including current NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton -- who all learned the trade from Inman

Result Dakar rally 2012 yamaha aiming for Bike and Quad podiums as Dakar enters home straight

Red Bull Yamaha TMN Team’s Helder Rodrigues has so far managed a solid and effective trek amidst Argentina and Chile to hold third position on his WR450F and consolidate his position with a 47 and a half minute deficit to Cyril Despres in second place and twenty minute gap over fellow Yamaha pilot David Casteu in fourth. The Portuguese (pictured) has marked 15th, 12th, 4th, 4th, 14th and 4th from the eight stages so far. Today he rides a two-part 550km special from Antofagasta to Iquique; the latter landscape having already formed one of the memorable features of the 2010 edition.

yamaha The sixth day of the Dakar was cancelled due to poor weather over the Andes and across the Chilean border. Rodrigues, who won third position and stood on the Dakar podium for the first time almost twelve months ago now faces the journey up through Chile into Peru and the ‘home straight’ to Lima.

“It’s a difficult Dakar. I’m feeling a bit tired, but everybody is in the same situation,” he said. “I’m still here and I’ve not suffered. I’m on top form and I can go on the attack when I want, and that’s what I’m going to do. I want to go head to head with the leading two. I’m third in the general standings, which is great.”

Unfortunately American Jonah Street was forced to withdrawal from the rally in the second stage with a technical problem but French duo David Casteu and Olivier Pain have ensured that Yamaha count on three riders in the top ten of the overall standings. Casteu has posted seven top ten finishes on what is his first outing on the Yamaha. Pain has managed a best result of ninth so far.

“It’s still going well for me,” commented Casteu. “I am well established in the race and hopefully to earn a good overall finish. More importantly I’m catching up to the podium positions behind Marc, Cyril and Helder and I love it! Thank you to Yamaha, Jose (Leloir), my team, my partners and all my fans … I’m a happy man!”

Rally Dakar ,Peterhansel resists in Dakar

Jan 10, 2012 (dpa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- IQUIQUE, Chile -- Frenchman Cyril Despres won the ninth stage and reclaimed the top spot of the motorbike section of the Dakar Rally, in a fierce two-man battle with defending champion Marc Coma of Spain.

Rally DakarAmong the cars, US driver Robby Gordon claimed the stage between Antofagasta and Iquique in northern Chile, with a 606-kilometre timed special that was divided into two.

Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel -- the man who has won the most editions of the Dakar Rally in history, with six wins on a motorbike and three in a car -- was second.

Peterhansel's Mini trailed Gordon's Hummer by 01:38, so the Frenchman retains the lead in the overall standings with a 05:58 lead over Gordon.

"We've been beaten fair and square. When the Hummers don't have any problems, they are a bit quicker than us. We're going to fight to hold on to the slender lead we have over him," Peterhansel said, in comments posted on the race website.

Gordon, in turn, promised to put up a fight all the way to Lima.

"We've got to make time. We're in a different position to him. He has to conserve his time and I've got to make it," he said.

It was not all good news for Hummer in Iquique, however. Qatar's Nasser al-Attiyah, who won last year's Dakar Rally in a Volkswagen, withdrew from the current edition of the race Tuesday, due to technical problems in his Hummer.

During the ninth stage of the Dakar Rally, Al-Attiyah had to stop three times to fix his alternator drive belt. In the 174th kilometre he decided to give up. He had managed to win two stages, but mechanical trouble in his Hummer had continually hampered his progress.

Among the motorbikes, Despres struck back at his arch-rival Coma.

On Monday, Coma had managed to drive an important wedge of close to 10 minutes in the overall standings between himself and Despres, but organizers eventually adjusted the times of the eighth stage to the benefit of several bikers who had got stuck in the mud including the Frenchman.

Coma had covered the same ground without trouble, and he was not pleased with the decision.

"It goes against the spirit of the race," Coma said.

Stewart moves to third. He's now chasing Dungey. And on lap three - he moves past Dungey into second. Lap three has Short out front, Stewart is closing, Dungey third. These three have bunched up together.

Shorty, riding for Supercross.com Honda, is holding off Stewart. On lap five, after a close battle, Stewart edges into the lead. It's Stewart first, Short right behind, and Dungey right behind Short. Good race. Fourth is Tedesco, and fifth is Jake Weimer.

Round 1 - AMA/FIM Supercross
Last lap - Stewart out front. Short holding off Dungey. With just four corners left in the race, Dungey moves past Short. James Stewart wins! Ryan Dungey second, Andrew Short third. Fourth Jake Weimer, and fith Ivan Tedesco. Brett Metcalfe finishes sixth.

In the four lap 250 LCQ - number 17 Eli Tomac on the GEICO Honda dominated the race.

The six lap Supercross LCQ - dominated by number 10 Justin Brayton on the Muscle Milk American Honda team.

9:18pm. The 250 Main Event line up are taking their warm up lap. Have you checked out the new Supercross.com Trend Report? We try to tell you who is going to place where - before the race goes off!

9:23pm. The gate drops. They'll go 15 laps. The leader at the start is number 59 ... but no matter. Tyla Rattray is in first as they come by the main grandstands triple jump on the first lap.

Two laps in - Tyla Rattray is in first. Dean Wilson second. But here comes Cole Seely! By the third lap, Rattray out front, but Seely is pushing hard. Dean Wilson comfortably in third. Fourth is number 58 Wil Hahn. Fifth is Vince Friese.

Changes as they start lap five. Cole Seely has taken over the lead! Tyla Rattray is next, followed by Dean Wilson, Wil Hahn, and Ryan Sipes. Next is Marvin Musquin, then Eli Tomac. Rattray is pushing Seely hard. And Hahn is pushing Wilson hard now.

More changes as they reach the halfway point of this race. Cole Seely is comfortably out front. Tyla is second. Dean Wilson third. Eli Tomac has moved into fourth, and Marvin Musquin is fifth. They are all running very close lap times - all around 1 minute 2 seconds per lap

20 lap Supercross Main Event - 9:55pm. The premiere Supercross class literally blasts off the starting line. The first corner leader - Ryan Villopoto! It's Villopoto, Tedesco, Reed, M Alessi, and Dungey.

Lap five - Villopoto, Reed, Dungey. The top three from the 2011 series. James Stewart has moved into fourth. Tedesco is fifth. M Alessi sixth. Andrew Short seventh. Then Justin Brayton, Brett Metcalfe, and Kevin Windham.

The Supercross Champion is making it look easy. He's got it all going on right now - the bike is good. He's physically fit. And his mental strength is top notch. Ryan leads on lap eight.

Chad Reed is second. Good podium position for the championship - remember - it's 17 rounds - a marathon not a sprint. Ryan Dungey is third, also a good finish in consideration for the championship. James Stewart is fourth. He's a ways behind Dungey. Then comes Tedesco, M Alessi, A Short, and J Brayton.

Lap ten - Dungey has a bobble. Stewart overtakes his position. Top ten run down at the halfway point - Villopoto, Reed, Stewart, Dungey, Tedesco, M Alessi, Short, Brayton, Windham, and Jake Weimer.

Lap 12 - Dungey goes past Stewart and into third again! And now Dungey is catching Reed! And Stewart is right behind! All three former Supercross Champions!

Villopoto is out front by himself - he leads by over 20 seconds on lap 14! Amazing. But the battle for second has the crowd's attention. Reed, Dungey, Stewart - all close together! Fourth a good ways back is Ivan Tedesco - his best ride in a long time.

At the end of lap 15, Stewart battles past Dungey! It's Villopoto way out front, Reedy still in second, Stewart third, and Dungey fourth. Lap 16 - Stewart falls going into a left hander! Dungey moves up!

20 laps in - and Ryan Villopoto has done it! Winning in convincing fashion! Chad Reed finishes second! Ryan Dungey third! And Justin Brayton moves up to fourth, with Jake Weimer fifth! James Stewart finishes sixth, Andrew Short seventh, and Kevin Windham eighth.

Reigning Champion Villopoto Brings Early Momentum into the 2012 Phoenix Supercross

After an exciting start to the season in front of a sold-out Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, heads to Phoenix this weekend for the second race of 2012 from Chase Field

Media Day for this weekend’s action takes place on Thursday, January 12, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. MT, featuring Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX and MotoConcepts Suzuki.

Last weekend, Villopoto made a statement to his rivals with his impressive performance. After grabbing the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot in the 20-lap main event, Villopoto sprinted through the opening laps, setting an exceptionally quick pace and opening up a healthy advantage over the field. Behind him, TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda’s Chad Reed, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, and Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s James Stewart engaged in a captivating battle for the runner-up spot that kept the capacity crowd on its feet, in an uproar. Ultimately, a crash by Stewart allowed Reed and Dungey to duel for second, with Reed prevailing.

After playing integral roles in the most competitive season in Monster Energy Supercross history in 2011, each of these four riders proved that there is more hotly-contested racing in store for 2012.

"It was a phenomenal night for me," said Villopoto. "I didn't have the heat race I wanted, so I didn't have a great gate pick. Once I was out front, I wanted to lay down fast laps and make no mistakes. I did make one small one, but overall, it was a great race for me."

The dominant effort by Villopoto not only gives the Washington native the early points lead, but also puts the pressure on his three closest rivals since none were able to contend with the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider once the gate dropped.

Reed added, “Villopoto made us look silly out here tonight. I am just happy to get second place tonight in this (deep) field of riders."

While Villopoto’s early sprint made it difficult for his competitors to challenge for the win, the “big four” showed their exceptional talent as the only riders in the entire 20-man field to post a lap under 1:02.000 on an extremely technical and challenging track.

Even though Villopoto has delivered the first blow in the championship battle, there is no doubt that Reed, Dungey, and Stewart will be putting in extra hours both on the track and in the gym this week to come back stronger than ever inside Chase Field and respond with their own winning effort.

In the opening race of the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Championship, Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely took advantage of a top-three start to grab his third professional victory and lead the point standings for the first time in his career.

Seely battled Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray throughout the opening stages of the 15-lap main event, but took over the lead on Lap 4 and never looked back. Rattray fended off the advances of his teammate Dean Wilson to hold on to the runner-up spot, while GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac fought his way from a 10th-place start to pass Wilson for the third and final spot on the podium.

The Western Regional Supercross Lites Class is exceptionally deep in young talent, and it showed last Saturday. Seely will look to keep the momentum going this weekend in Phoenix, while is counterparts will also look to assert themselves in the short eight-race championship.

Last year in Phoenix, Villopoto was in search of back-to-back victories to start the season, and was on the heels of Stewart for the lead throughout the main event. However, a fall by Villopoto allowed Stewart to pull away and take the win. In the Supercross Lites Class, Josh Hansen captured the win for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki.

SPEED will broadcast the Supercross class race LIVE at 9:30pm EST on January 14, 2012.

2012 Championship Tie Between Bowers and Gibson Highlights AMA Arenacross Series Debut in Topeka

The AMA Arenacross Series rang in the New Year with a weekend full of excitement last weekend, and now, a tie atop of the Arenacross Class standings leads the storylines heading into this weekend’s series debut from Topeka, Kan., and the Kansas Expocentre. Two nights of competition will leave a lasting impression in the Kansas capital, as current championship co-leader Tyler Bowers, aboard his Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki presented by Maxxis, and FMF Power/Poynt TUF Honda’s Jeff Gibson lead the world’s best into action on Friday, January 13, and Saturday, January 14.

Last weekend in Grand Rapids, AMA Arenacross Series hosted its first round of the 2012 calendar. The fifth round of the season was highlighted by a dominant pair of efforts by Bowers over the course of two evenings. The reigning AMA Arenacross Series champion swept the weekend’s main events to give him a series-leading six wins, and move into a tie with Gibson atop the point standings. Gibson also put forth a strong weekend of his own, following Bowers across the line each night with back-to-back runner-ups. A tip over while leading on opening night may have cost Gibson a win last Friday, but despite the mistake, he rebounded strongly to minimize the loss of points.

Both Bowers and Gibson have proven to be the class of the field through five rounds this season, and between the two, have won all but one of the nine main events. Now that they sit deadlocked in the championship, expect both riders to take their riding to even new heights, beginning this weekend at the Expocenter.

Topeka also serves as the hometown race for Auburn native Tanner Moore, who rides for Letko KTM. With just one round complete in the Western Regional Arenacross Lites Class Championship, Moore serves as the current points leader, holding just a one-point lead over Venning Motorsports KTM’s Kevin Markwardt.

The weekend serves as an ideal opportunity for Moore to extend his lead, and put forth a memorable effort in front of his family and friends. Additionally, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki’s Vicki Golden will begin her quest for even more history as she attempts to capture the Western Regional title. Golden returned to action for the first time in 2012 last weekend, after being forced to delay the start of her season because of a broken collarbone she suffered in preparations for the year. A lot of eyes will be on this pair of riders throughout the weekend.

Back-to-back nights of action from the Kansas Expocentre kick off on Friday, January 13, before coming to a dramatic conclusion on Saturday, January 14. Opening ceremonies for both nights begin at 7 p.m. CT

MX for Children Charity Creates 2012 Season-Long Fundraiser

Jackpot Challenge Opens Opportunity to Win a Backstage Pass to Monster Energy Supercross

MX for Children
MX for Children announced today that it has once again teamed up with Feld Motor Sports to offer fans across the country an opportunity to enjoy the Inside Line Experience – the ultimate backstage pass to the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season. The Inside Line Experience, which includes events during supercross races in Houston, St. Louis, Toronto, Seattle, and Salt Lake City, will culminate in Las Vegas this year.

The MX for Children Jackpot Challenge raises funds for the Hydrocephalus Association, a 501(c)(3), which distributes the donations to the following children’s hospitals: Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital of Alabama, Houston’s Texas Children’s, Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital, Salt Lake City’s Primary Children’s, Seattle Children’s, St. Louis Children’s, and Toronto’s SickKids Hospital. The funds go to support the hospitals’ research to improve the brain condition hydrocephalus – the #1 cause of brain surgery for children.

The Inside Line Experience rewards qualifying fundraisers with a unique opportunity to walk the track, tour a team trailer, watch the race, and participate in a meet and greet with some of the top supercross racers. The Jackpot Challenge winner, recognized as the top fundraiser, will be flown to Las Vegas to get the Inside Line Experience at the Monster Energy Supercross finale at Sam Boyd Stadium on May 5.

“I've done quite a few events now with MX for Children and love helping them out,” said L&Mc Racing Honda’s Andrew Short. “It's a great cause, and being a parent myself I know how important it is to help sick kids! “

“The funds raised improve treatments for hydrocephalus, a devastating brain condition, through the research of seven great pediatric centers across North America,” said Paul Gross, MX for Children founder. “We have a lot of people who ask how they can help raise money if they do not live near one of our host cities, and with the Jackpot Challenge it allows everyone in the United States and Canada to get involved and try and earn a VIP Las Vegas supercross experience.”

“We are thrilled to once again to be teaming up with MX for Children to commemorate one lucky fundraiser for their charitable efforts,” said Dave Prater, director of supercross, Feld Motor Sports. “The Inside Line Experience supports a great cause, so we are excited to honor the nation’s top fundraiser by providing the ultimate backstage experience during the Monster Energy Supercross finals at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium.

AMA Supercross 2012 Season Opens Tonight In Anaheim

AMA Supercross

Jan 7, 2012 - Ryan Villopoto may have won last year's AMA Monster Energy Supercross title, but many eyes tonight will be on James Stewart.

"Bubba" has a new ride this season atop a Joe Gibbs Racing Yamaha, and everyone is curious to see how Stewart will fare.

But that's just one of the storylines leading into the Supercross opener in Anaheim, Calif., where the 17-race schedule gets underway this evening.

Among other questions entering the 2012 Supercross season:

– Can Villopoto defend his title? With Reed and Stewart at full strength, it doesn't appear he would be the favorite after winning by four points last season.

– Will Reed take his Honda to the front right away? With increased factory support at TwoTwo Motorsports, Reed figures to have a bike to contend for the championship.

– How will Ryan Dungey do with his new team (KTM)? The third-year rider landed at KTM this season after winning the 2010 championship with Suzuki.

– Will Trey Canard race? His status for the opener remains unclear after a broken collarbone.

Andrea Dovizioso fractured his right collarbone on Thursday in a training accident, when he fell whilst riding a motocross bike. The Italian rider, who will ride a Yamaha M1 in 2012 with Hervé Poncharal's Tech 3 team, received immediate medical attention and will undergo surgery at Bologna Hospital on Saturday.

Manager of the French team Poncharal explained that until Dovizioso's operation had taken place it would be difficult to give any indication with regards to the amount of time the rider will need to recover.
Andrea Dovizioso
Speaking to motogp.com, Poncharal said he was not overly concerned "because there are three weeks before the Sepang Test, which is only the first Test of the year. Also, both Colin (Edwards) and Cal (Crutchlow) recovered very quickly from similar injuries last season."

Dovizioso's personal manager, Simone Batistella, revealed how the unfortunate accident happened: "Andrea was training on Thursday and riding a motocross bike. It was a training session like any other, but then Dovi had this crash which he himself described as a minor one. However, the way in which he landed when he fell resulted in a fracture to his right collarbone."

"As far as the Sepang Test goes, the first impressions of the medics who examined him are that he should not have any major problems, and they expect and hope for a speedy recovery. Tomorrow (Saturday) he'll have an operation and then we'll know if everything's going to plan or if there are any problems. The only certainty is that he'll have a slight delay to his preparations for Sepang.
